The weblin gate in the press:

Currently, it’s not uncommon for a person to have several avatars for various sites, similar to how some people have profiles on more than one social network.

Until now, what happened in a virtual world stayed inside that virtual world, but recently a German company called Weblin created a system that allows Second Life users to transplant a copy of their character into other websites and transport it around the Web.

Already, Facebook and MySpace are working with partner sites to allow their members to use a single profile across a breadth of websites. It’s only a matter of time before experts are talking about the next step and allowing users to use a single avatar across the Web to stroll through Second Life and then traipse through a virtual storefront on another site.

There will be software compatibility and copyright issues to work out, but it’s a conversation that’s bound to come up.

Not wishing to disappoint, I begin at Wikipedia, and note this intriguing definition of International: ”In American English, “international” is commonly used to signify “outside of the country”.  For the rest of us (non-American English!), the word “international” would describe interactions between two or more Nations as in “an International football match”.

Second Life goes international, or better: US centric SL becomes aware of the “here be dragons” areas. That’s the underlying message of the current post at blog.secondlife.com. Old news, but probably a big surprise for the american folks: most residents are not from USA. Then follows a anecdotic list of interesting “unamerican” projects and sims. How come that reminds me to “hungary is a country??!?“?

Anyway, a nice start into 2009…

And yeah, copypastaing “…” instead of “…” from your M$ Word Processor into an URL is probably not a good idea, I know a handful of RSS libs that will soon bail out…

Weblins — das sind kleine Avatare, mit denen man auf normalen Webseiten herumspazieren kann, um zu chatten, mit Freunden gemeinsam zu surfen, über aktuelle Themen auf der gerade besuchten Webseite zu diskutieren, oder einfach um präsent zu sein, und auf der eigenen Website Besucher zu empfangen. Seit 2006 sind sie — von der Hamburger Firma zweitgeist erdacht — im World Wide Web unterwegs. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, auf wievielen Seiten, die ich jeden Tag absurfe, sich gleichzeitig Weblins treffen.

Im neu eröffneten weblin Gate in  New Berlin kann man nun seinen voll ausgestatteten Second-Life-Avatar von unserem professionellen 3D-Fotografen Weblin Paule ablichten lassen, und dann direkt mit seinem persönlichen weblin weitersurfen.

Für SL-Residents ist das eine tolle Möglichkeit, den eigenen Avatar, die liebewonnene Identität unkompliziert ins gute alte World Wide Web mitzunehmen, und für routinierte Weblins eine einfache Art, sich mit allen Mitteln, die Second Life zu bieten hat, ihr persönliches Aussehen zu gestalten.

Die Welt ist schlecht… Dass man in Second Life Sex haben kann, und dass das sogar der einzige Sinn und Zweck von virtuellen Welten ist, haben wir ja im letzten Jahr zur Genüge aus der Presse erfahren können. Aber die Meldung, dass ein englisches Paar sich nicht nur in SL kennengelernt, und dort und im æchten Läben geheiratet (“fanden sich auch offline sehr sympathisch“, hahaha) , sondern auch wieder getrennt hat, nachdem die Frau von einer Online-Affäre des Mannes erfahren hat, mobilisiert offensichtlich ungeahnte Käuferschichten/Menschenmengen, SL auszuprobieren.

Rechts oben in der Ecke, unter “Tiny SL Statistics” findet man einen Zähler, der ganz simpel die Benutzeranzahl des letzten Tages, von der von heute abzieht. Normalerweise steht der so auf 8-13.000 Neuankömmligen pro Tag. Gestern waren es über 35.000 Neuanmeldungen, und heute 52259…

Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, wie man als Content Creator auf diese Neuzugänge reagieren soll. Soll ich ein Cybersex-HOWTO schreiben, oder eher einen Poseball programmieren, der in unregelmäßigen Abständen Funken und Rauchwolken ausstößt und den Geist aufgibt? Auf jeden Fall wird die Newbiefrage Nummer 1 demnächst wohl nicht mehr lauten: “How to make money?”, sondern “How to cyber?”.

Also: Da gibt es die blauen Bälle, und es gibt die rosa Bälle. Und wenn die beiden sich sehr, sehr liebhaben….
